With all the changes to the Instagram algorithm this year, you may feel like you’re spending a lot of effort creating content without getting a lot in return. So what can you do to combat the algorithm? Here is what we know about Instagram’s changes and the steps for increasing Instagram Engagement.
Just like in 2022, Reels are still preferred to any other media type on Instagram. What has changed for 2023 is how Instagram is prioritizing who views your videos. There are 3 metrics Instagram uses to analyze your Reels:
- Views: The total number of views a Reel receives.
- Watch Time: How much of your Reel people watch.
- Average View Duration (AVD): The total watch time on a Reel, divided by the total number of video plays.
So what does this mean for you? It means when making videos, your goal is to get your followers to watch the whole Reel from start to finish AND watch it again and again. Here are some tips to help you achieve this.
The Intro Is Key: To make sure your followers watch your whole video, hook them with a catchy intro. The best way to do this is by giving people only partial information to pique their interest.
Try one of these hooks:
- “Don’t do this…”
- “The secret to…”
- “3 things I learned are…
- “Mistakes I see people make are…”
- “You’ll never believe…”
Make It Short: Making Reels shorter gives them a better chance of being viewed in their entirety AND gives them a better chance to be viewed again. When making a video, go for quality content and keep it short.
Make Captions Long: Remember, the way to get more engagement on your Instagram reels is to get your followers to watch your whole video, several times. Writing long captions makes it more likely that your followers will watch your video again in order to read all of your captions.
Most importantly analyze your insights and see what’s working for you. The more you can gather data on how your posts are performing, the more power you will have when it comes to increasing Instagram engagement on your feed.
